Field guide
How to play
Find one answer that fits every circle, and the sun goes dark.
The idea
Each level puts a sun in the middle of a ring of circles. Every circle is a category, like “Found in a kitchen” or “Has a double letter”. Type one word or phrase that belongs in all of them at once. The more circles it fits, the more of the sun it covers.
There are five levels a day, and every level brings brand-new circles. You get one answer per level, so think before you press Eclipse. Using the same answer on more than one level is fine.
Scoring
Each level is scored by how many circles your answer fits:
- Totalipse every circle100
- Umbra all but one60
- Antumbra all but two, on 4+ circle levels45
- Gibbous all but three, on 5+ circle levels30
- Penumbra at least one20
- No eclipse none0
A perfect day is 500. Every circle you fit earns you something, but a Totalipse is the big prize, so it pays to hunt for the answer that fits everything.
Streaks
Your streak counts days in a row where you landed a Totalipse on level 5, the hardest level. Everyone gets the same puzzle, and a new one starts at midnight Eastern time (ET), wherever you are. Your stats live on this device; sign in to carry them to any other.
Why didn't my answer count?
Answers are checked against a word list, right in your browser. Plurals, capital letters and accents don't matter, and names from around the world count. If a word isn't in the list at all, it doesn't use up your turn. With Spelling help on (in Settings), you'll get “Did you mean…?” suggestions for words up to two letters off: tap one to use it.
Spelling circles, like “Starts with B” or “Has a double letter”, are checked letter by letter, so there's no arguing with those.
Where do the puzzles come from?
Every puzzle is made ahead of time. Answer lists are built from dictionaries and open reference sources, then checked by hand and approved before each day goes out. Your answers are checked instantly, right on your device.
Sharing
When you finish, the Share button copies your day as five moons. It shows how you did without giving any answers away.
